October 2020 Competition
Earlier in the lockdown I brought this wooden car to life. The pedals salvaged from an old plastic noddy car. Wood was anything found in garage, old bed frame, oak floorboards, woodturning involved wheels made from beech and yew from woodturning pile, steering wheel, mahog and oak lights. Engine sounds and horn courtesy of of old toy bits and internet. Brightware from old BBQ.

One resin and well rotted oak bowl. Banksia nut tea light, inside has been metal leafed.
It looked great, however, I don't do thin very often and it has gone waney! I seem to come across this problem often!
I made a ”rice bowl” from holm oak with a Purple Heart rim. I’m in the process of making some chopsticks (from Purple Heart) to go with it. This bowl is about 3-4mm thick.
An English walnut hollow form with walnut finial. It has a Purple Heart inlay for the collar and it also has one just above the foot.
The two vases are Monkey Puzzle and Spalted Birch and the bowl is Yew.

Handplane. One piece mahogany body. Veritas plane kit. Turned front knob
Thank you to the Members who entered the competition. The Committee judged the entries and voted for their top 3. The 3 entries scoring the most are shown first, followed by the remaining entries.
Congratulations to the winners. The only prize is the honour!
Here is my offering- a chess set. I will sell it later for charity as I sell all my work to support Freedom from Torture. As a bit of interest it is all made from recycle timber. The chess pieces come from a discarded curtain rail (unknown timber) white bleached then dyed and black dyed. The light parts of the board are from old oak kitchen cupboard doors and the darker timber in the board is mahogany from and old Edwardian bed cabinet.
Winner - Michael Maisey
2nd - Geoffrey Leake
It’s a small salt dish made from English Walnut with a Purple Heart lid. I used a Dremmel to do the indentations, sprayed with ebonising lacquer and sanded back. The spoon is also made from Walnut and has a shell attached.
3rd - Kevin Garwood
